Stuart Russell
Stuart Russell is a professor of computer science at UC Berkeley and one of the most influential figures in AI research. He is co-author of Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, the standard textbook used in AI courses worldwide, and author of Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control. Stuart founded and directs the Center for Human-Compatible AI at Berkeley, where his research focuses on keeping advanced AI systems safe and controllable as their capabilities grow.
Educated in physics at Oxford before completing his PhD in computer science at Stanford, he has spent his career at the intersection of AI research and global policy, advising governments on AI safety and regulation. He serves as a board director at a major Canadian insurance company, giving him a rare view of how AI actually gets deployed inside large organizations. He speaks and writes widely on the economic, political, and human consequences of advanced AI.
